The actor, 40, has filed for divorce from Cox, 47, in Los Angeles Superior Court. The couple announced their separation in Oct. 2010.
Arquette – who cites irreconcilable differences in court documents filed on June 8 and obtained by PEOPLE – is asking for joint legal and physical custody of their daughter Coco, who turns 8 on Wednesday.
The couple, who wed in June 1999, have remained close despite their split.
"He's my favorite person in the world," Cox told PEOPLE in January of her Scream costar. "He's my best friend. No matter what happens in our future, he's my very best friend."
